De-Clutter Your Home and Rejuvenate Your Life!

De-Clutter Your Home and Rejuvenate Your Life!

When you hear the words “Spring Clean” you automatically think ‘cleaning your house’, when in actual fact it can mean many different things.

Spring time is all about renewal, so it makes sense to declutter and organise your home before giving it a good clean. It’s also the perfect time to renew yourself and your energy by doing yoga, eating healthy and meditating.

For me as a professional organiser, this season truly is a magical time of year. It’s when that feeling hits you and makes you want to open up your home to let the fresh air in and makeover your environment.

People often ask why I do that I do and the answer is very simple – In order to feel free you must first free yourself of STUFF.

This may sound simple but for many people clearing clutter and getting rid of items that hold sentimental value to them is extremely hard. Whether it’s a rose from your first date or a childhood toy, parting with things can be a very emotional process.

When I make a purchase I am very mindful of why so I ask myself 3 questions:

  1. Do I need it?
  2. Will I use it?
  3. Can I afford it?

By doing this I will alleviate a lot of decision making down the road because my reasons for buying it are justified. There is no point buying something because you like it or want it but will never use it, so there is definitely an art to being mindful when shopping, and once you have it mastered you will notice a world of difference.

With that in mind, when it comes time to declutter and organise your home you can then ask yourself these questions:

  1. Do I use it?
  2. Do I love it?
  3. Do I want it?

Asking yourself these simple questions will help you make the decision on whether to throw the item away, donate it or keep it. Once you have made that decision it is an easy process to keep going. Clearing clutter will help clear the mind and make more room for new and exciting experiences. When there is clutter, it is always there in the back of your mind (even though you may not realise it), taking up space that should be reserved for something amazing.

All in all use this beautiful season to rejuvenate your home and yourself and remember these helpful tips for staying Decluttered and Organised…

  • If you haven't used it in 6 months question why you have it. If you can't answer why you have it, throw it out or donate it to a charity.

  • Only use each room in your home for their purpose.

  • Don't use your garage as a storage space for items you never use.

  • Buy only what you need and know you will use.

  • Go through your fridge, pantry, laundry and bathroom cupboards at least every 3 months to discard out of date products.

  • Instead of hanging onto items from your past that you keep tucked away in a box, take a photo and create a memorabilia photo album. That way you can always look at it and still have something to remember it by.

  • When shopping for clothes, if you have too many items make a rule when you buy something new you get rid of something old you never wear.

  • As your child outgrows their toys, rather than throw them out or hang onto them, speak to parents with kids older or younger and do a swap. That way you can get different toys without needing more storage space and the toys will be used for years to come.

  • Take all old books or magazines to local businesses to sit at their tables for clients to read while in the waiting room.

  • If you have old sheets and towels, donate them to animal shelters rather than throw them away.

  • Any kitchen items with broken lids or missing components - get rid of them if they can't be used for their intended purpose.

Once you start clearing out your home you'll notice a huge difference in your state of mind and can watch the magic begin!
