Why Healthy Snacking Is So Good For You

Snacking can get a bad wrap.

But we’re here to tell you something amazing. Something that will be like sweet, sweet music to your ears.

Well, when done right that is. We don’t suggest you rush to 7/11 to buy 5 Mars bars or fill your cupboards with BBQ Shapes, just because ‘Retreat Yourself told you to’.

So listen up! When snacking is done right, and by done right we mean – healthy, nutritious, balanced & measured – it’s very good for you. In fact, it’s very important to your health & wellness.

We recently teamed up with Snack Proud for our Spring Box to feature a couple of snacks from their range of in-office Honesty Snack Boxes, so we thought we’d take that prompt to spend some time talking about why healthy snacking is so important.

Snacking keeps your brain functioning all day long

Ever noticed the brain fog take over when you haven’t eaten? When you are hungry, it immediately affects your performance. Focus & performance decrease, your decision making is poorer, and it just takes longer to get things done.

Snacking during the day does 2 things: firstly, it means you are fueling your body & your brain all day to ensure sustained focus & concentration, and it also means you are less likely to overeat at meal times (because we all know a BIG lunch is NOT good for afternoon productivity)!

Snacking provides an additional opportunity for nutrients

Your body require many nutrients to function optimally. Getting in all the required fruits, veggies, good fats, proteins and so on into your 3 meals can be challenging, so snack times present an opportunity to squeeze in extra nutrients that your body requires on a daily basis.

Choose healthy, nutritious snacks during snack times and your body will thank you for it.

To prevent you from getting hungry and making bad decisions at meal time

You know the drill. Snack time comes, but lunch or dinner time isn’t too far away and so you think you can just hold on a little longer. But in the meantime, your body is craving nourishment, and starts tricking you into thinking you are hungrier than you are. Worse, it tells you the only thing it will accept is some delicious carb-filled, fatty foods.

Snacking stops your body from getting so hungry in between mealtimes that you make bad choices on what you eat for lunch or dinner. It keeps you satisfied and allows you to make healthier choices for your bigger meals.

It keeps your energy up!

Not only does snacking help with brain functioning, it also fuels your body to keep you fighting fit all day long.

And healthy snacking is key here – sugary snacks can cause your blood sugar to spike and crash, leaving you feeling drained of energy, whereas healthy snacking will actually have the opposite effect.

To keep things interesting!

Sustaining a healthy diet is hard when only consuming a green smoothie, a chicken salad and salmon & veg each day. It’s so important to add a little fun into what you eat to keep things interesting, and to ensure you aren’t always craving something you can’t have.

Snacking can be super fun if you let it – healthy raw choc bars, spiced nuts or savoury baked legumes. Pair these with some veggie sticks or fruit, and you’re not going to feel deprived.

And back to the guys over at Snack Proud – they certainly keep things interesting. Think protein balls, jerky, coconut chips, nuts, health choc snacks and more…
